Electric vs Gas Hot Water Systems, Which is Best?

Electric vs Gas Hot Water Systems, Which is Best?

When you're purchasing your new hot water system, one of the first choices you will need to make is what type of hot water system you would like to install. We know this can be a little overwhelming, so we've put together a helpful guide for you to familiarise yourself with the different options that are available.

Electric Hot Water Systems

Electric hot water systems are one of the most commonly installed hot water systems in Australian homes. While an electric hot water system is a cheaper initial purchase, it is important to check the power supply tariff - energy costs can add up. We recommend your power supply is considered when going electric.

Electric hot water systems are available is single and dual element options. For general usage, a single element is sufficient but in high hot water consumption homes a dual element hot water system may be preferred.

Electric hot water systems are able to be powered by your existing house solar panels if sized correctly.  If this is an option you are considering, we recommend to check with your electrician if this is possible.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas hot water systems tend to have a higher initial cost in comparison to electric systems, but tend to be cheaper to run on a monthly basis. Gas hot water systems are available as a standard tank or as an instantaneous tankless system.

Heat Pump Water System

Heat pumps operate by extracting heat from the air to heat water in the system to reduce power consumption costs.  They operate at their peak performance when installed outside and work best is warmer regions.  Due to their ventilation needs when operating this type of system will be louder than an electric or gas hot water system.
